IVR is organising the 10th edition of the IVR Colloquium in Vienna on Thursday 5 and Friday 6 October 2023. Located in the heart of Europe and on the river Danube, this is a wonderful central location for the IVR Colloquium.
IVR organises colloquia to promote the implementation of international conventions and recommendations of international conditions and transport documents. During these colloquia, various legal professionals from our network will give presentations on current issues in inland shipping law.

Within walking distance of the Hotel Bristol Vienna (where the colloquium sessions will take place) is the Motel One Wien-Staatsoper, the congress hotel where the secretariat of IVR will stay and which we can recommend as a hotel to spend the night. This hotel will also serve as a meeting point to leave together for the dinner location.

Motel One Wien-Staatsoper cannot hold any rooms for our guests, but at the moment there are still enough rooms available. Given the expected crowds in the city in the week of our colloquium due to other (business) events, we advise you to book a room as soon as possible (there are extensive cancellation options). As a location for the colloquium sessions on 5 and 6 October we managed to secure the beautiful Hotel Bristol, one of Vienna’s prime addresses ever since 1892. Artists, stars, monarchs and business travelers have long appreciated the comfort, delightful service and cosmopolitan flair of the hotel.
The hotel is located within walking distance of the Motel One Wien-Staatsoper, metro station Karlsplatz and just a stone’s throw away from the impressive Vienna State Opera.
The colloquium sessions will take place in the Salon Schönbrunn, and the lunches on both Thursday and Friday will take place in the art deco style Bristol Lounge.

Location Dinner | Palais Daun-Kinsky
On Thursday evening, we will jointly walk through Vienna’s Old Town to Palais Daun-Kinsky for dinner. We will start walking from the Motel One Wien-Staatsoper – only a 3 minute walk from the Hotel Bristol.
The palace is in fact named Daun-Kinsky, after the man that commissioned it: Field Marshal Count Wirich Philipp Laurenz Graf von und zu Daun. He had this opulent Baroque palace built between 1713 and 1719 by renowned master architect Lukas von Hildebrandt. Inside, it features eye-catching stucco work by Alberto Camesina and breathtaking frescoes by Carlo Innocenzo Carlone and Marcantonio Chiarini.
After a welcome reception in the Herrensalon, we will take seat in the Ovaler Festsaal for a wonderful 4 course dinner. With its red marble, gilt stucco and a beautiful ceiling painting it is an absolute jewel in Vienna’s Baroque crown.
Austria’s capital Vienna offers a blend of imperial traditions, music, and endearing charm. With around 2 million inhabitants in the city and almost 3 million within the metropolitan area, Vienna is the cultural, economic and political center of Austria. Furthermore, it is the largest of cities located on the river Danube.
Art and culture had a long tradition in Vienna, including theater, opera, classical music and fine arts. Additionally, Vienna is known as the “City of Music”, due to its musical legacy, as many famous classical musicians such as Beethoven and Mozart called Vienna home. Vienna is also home to the world’s first psychoanalyst, Sigmund Freud.
Besides its classical character, Vienna has now also become a vibrant metropolis and a vibrant student city. For those who have the opportunity to stay for the weekend after the colloquium to explore the city further, we can definitely recommend it.
